The Roguevania tag is a combination of two popular game genres: Rogue-like and Metroidvania. It describes a subset of games that incorporate elements from both genres to create a unique gameplay experience.

In Roguevania games, players explore an interconnected world filled with monsters, traps, and mysteries. The world often features non-linear level design and hidden paths that encourage exploration.

Similar to the rogue-like genre, Roguevania games feature elements such as permadeath and procedural generation. This means that each playthrough offers new challenges, as the layout of levels or encounters changes with each attempt.

However, unlike traditional rogue-like games where progression starts from scratch after every death, Roguevania titles often incorporate Metroidvania-style character progression mechanics. This means that players can acquire permanent upgrades or abilities throughout their playthroughs that persist even after death. These upgrades allow access to previously inaccessible areas or provide advantages in combat.

Examples of popular Roguevania titles include:

• Dead Cells Developed by Motion Twin, Dead Cells blends fast-paced 2D combat with procedural levels and a vast array of weapons and abilities. Players unlock permanent upgrades as they progress through the game, allowing them to delve deeper into challenging dungeons.
• Salt and Sanctuary Created by Ska Studios, this 2D action RPG combines dark atmospheric exploration with complex combats reminiscent of Soulsborne games (like Dark Souls) while featuring branching paths for players to explore.

Roguevania games offer a mix of challenging gameplay along with the thrill of uncovering secrets in an immersive, non-linear world while retaining some aspects of procedural generation and permadeath.
